Related Information
The Compliance Audit Committee is a legislated body established under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 to oversee matters related to municipal election campaign finance compliance.
Since 2018, the Township of Wellington North has participated in a joint Compliance Audit Committee with the other lower-tier municipalities in Wellington County. This shared model provides a cost-effective and legislatively compliant approach to managing compliance audit matters while allowing participating municipalities access to a broader range of expertise, including professionals with backgrounds in law, accounting, auditing, academia, and municipal election finance.
The Committee consists of three to seven members and operates independently of the municipal election process. Members must meet the eligibility requirements set out in the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 and cannot include municipal employees or officers, members of council, current candidates, certain former candidates or registered third parties, or individuals with conflicts of interest. Meetings are held on an as-needed basis, are generally open to the public, and are supported administratively by the Clerk of the municipality where the compliance audit request originates.
