Our Roads Operations Department maintains approximately 390 km of Township roads, including 232 km of gravel roads, along with bridges, culverts and road infrastructure throughout Wellington North. Our team of dedicated staff works year-round to keep our roads maintained and safe—from everyday road repairs and maintenance to snow plowing, salting and sanding in the winter months.
With works yards in Arthur, Kenilworth, Mount Forest and Damascus, our team is ready to respond to the changing needs of our community.
Roads: What You Need to Know
We work year-round to keep Wellington North’s roads safe, accessible and well maintained.
The Township maintains its roads in accordance with Ontario’s Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways and our Municipal Servicing Standards. Our Roads – Operations team regularly patrols roads and completes a variety of maintenance activities throughout the year.What We Do
🛠️ Pothole Repairs
Potholes are identified and repaired as needed. Freeze-thaw cycles can cause potholes to develop, particularly during the winter and spring. Please drive with care when road conditions are changing.
🚜 Gravel Road Maintenance
Our gravel roads are regularly inspected for potholes, ruts and other issues. Grading is completed as needed to keep roads in good condition.
💧 Dust Control
Dust suppressant is applied to gravel roads each spring and summer, weather and road conditions permitting. Roads are graded before the application.
🛣️ Line Painting
Road lines are repainted annually, typically in the spring. Please use caution around line-painting equipment and allow freshly painted lines time to dry.
🧹 Street Sweeping
Spring sweeping removes sand and debris left behind from winter operations. When sweepers are working in your area, please avoid parking on the street so our crews can clean the roadway efficiently.
🌧️ Ditch Maintenance
Roadside ditches help manage water and protect the road from drainage issues. Ditches are inspected regularly, and maintenance is completed when required.If you are planning to direct water from a sump pump, eavestrough or other outlet toward a roadside ditch, please contact the Township before making any changes.
🏠 Sump Pump Discharge
Sump pump discharge should not be directed onto roads or sidewalks. During freezing temperatures, water can create dangerous icy conditions. Where possible, discharge should be directed onto your property so the water can safely drain away.
🌿 Roadside Mowing
Roadside mowing helps maintain clear sightlines and keep road shoulders in good condition. Mowing typically takes place during the summer and again in the fall.Help Us Keep Roads Safe
Road maintenance is a year-round job, and conditions can change quickly. Please slow down, use caution around our crews and equipment, and give our operators plenty of room to work.
Wellington North roads are operated and maintained by three different
authorities - the County of Wellington, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and the Township of Wellington North.If you are adding a new driveway entrance or altering an existing driveway entrance, please review the Road Entrance Policy and Application (PDF).

temporary road closure or traffic restriction?
The Township’s Temporary Road Closure Policy outlines the requirements and process for requesting a temporary closure of a Township road.
A Temporary Road Closure Application must be submitted for Township review and approval before a road closure can take place. This allows the Township to consider traffic management, public safety, emergency access, and other impacts.
Please submit your application to bduncan@wellington-north.com well in advance of your requested closure date to allow sufficient time for review and approval.

These seasonal restrictions help protect Township roads from damage during the spring thaw, when road surfaces are more vulnerable.

Residents are responsible for ensuring their mailbox is properly located, securely installed and well maintained.
During snow plowing, snow may be pushed or displaced onto the roadside and can impact mailboxes. The Township is not responsible for damage caused by snow or snow-clearing operations, and mailboxes damaged in this manner will not be repaired or replaced by the Township.
A properly installed and maintained mailbox helps reduce the risk of damage during winter operations.
