Property Tax – FAQ

What do property taxes go towards ?Money collected through property taxes is divided between three components:
Municipal (37%), County (47%), and Education (16%). The Municipal portion of the taxes fund services provided by the Township of Wellington North such as fire protection, recreational facilities, protective inspection and control, roads, and more. It is also used to contribute to police services and Conservation Authorities. The County portion helps support Wellingon County's role in supplying various services such as roads, waste management, police services, ambulance, social housing, long term care, and more.
The education portion goes towards supporting Ontario’s elementary and secondary school system.

How is my property tax rate calculated? Property tax is a levy based on the assessed value of property.
The Current Value Assessment of each property is determined by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) and provided to each municipality.
Your tax bill has three components, a Municipal (Township) portion, a County portion, and an Education portion:

  1. Municipal taxes: The tax rate to cover the costs of supplying municipal services is based on Township council's adoption of our annual budget. Revenues from provincial grants, user fees, and other sources are deducted from the total expenditures, resulting in a final taxation.
  2. County taxes: These taxes are based on the tax rate adopted by the County of Wellington. This portion is remitted to the County to support their role in supplying various services.
  3. Education taxes: This tax rate is set by the Province of Ontario and remitted to the local school board to support the education system in Ontario.

Why did property taxes increase more than usual this year?Tax increases can be driven by new local services or an increased cost of existing services. For the 2023 property tax bill, a portion of the increase is due to contributions for new and existing facilities and infrastructure will support our growing community for years to come. More information about these projects can be found here.
An increase in property tax can also be the result of an increase in the assessed value of your property or a change in the classification of your property.
If you disagree with the assessed value of your property, you can contact MPAC to complete a Request for Reconsideration Form.
